Making Tech Work for Workers

Making Tech Work for Workers

Last Tuesday, several Social Sciences faculty and staff members attended Making Tech Work for Workers: A Statewide Conference on Labor, AI, and Building Power in California in Sacramento. Chris Benner (Institute for Social Transformation faculty director), Steve McKay (Center for Labor and Community faculty director), Zoe Zhao (Center for Labor and Community Faculty Advisory Member), and Sarah Mason (Center for Labor and Community managing director) took part in vibrant panels, breakouts, and table discussions.

This first-of-its-kind gathering brought together over 200 unions, worker advocates, community groups, tech allies, and funders to confront how artificial intelligence and emerging technologies impact workers. Participants from diverse fields, including dock workers, nurses, and teachers, strategized on safeguarding jobs, negotiating AI deployment in workplaces, and resisting exploitative tech practices.
